That's the beauty of FZ. He's no longer "out there", and some of his stuff are now considered classics. His more serious chamber and orchestral works are now receiving serious recognition and even respect from academia, and the U of North Texas, formerly NTSU, now gives an entire class on the Music of Zappa.

A personal anecdote-
The first time I tried pot (this was probably the summer of 1965), a couple of us went for a ride with the Scoutleader, and we listened to the "Freakout" album.

A personal anecdote- The first time I tried pot (this was probably the summer of 1965), a couple of us went for a ride with the Scoutleader, and we listened to the "Freakout" album. Funny you should equate Zappa with drugs....he didn't use them. Most people assumed he did because he made his living playing "the electric guitar". .....and because they'd heard his music. After the Freak Out album was done, the Mothers wanted to throw Frank out, because he was the only one not using drugs! Frank thought drugs made him stupid, and he didn't like the way people behaved on drugs. He did; however drink a very occasional beer or glass of wine. Mostly though, he smoked cigarettes and drank coffee. He admitted to trying pot a few times, but he didn't like it. If he had, he would have smoked it, because he liked to smoke.

Frank Zappa .... I've seen him twice over here in Germany. First time at the end of the 70s and second time about 10 years later. That were "real classical" concerts. He played about 2 hours without a break. At the second concert he introduced his son Dweezil. The played "Whippin' Post"!?! from the Allman Brothers. I think Frank was a real genius - one of the best composers of the 20s century. I have 15 of his albums - and each of them is a "treasure island" --> So much things to discover!

Maybe we could move off the Frank Zappa love fest and get back to the topic. I'm working on The Nearness of YOu.

LOL! jazzalta2 ;D Well, today, I've been trying to make some charts for my guitar class. They haven't been practicing, so the music we're supposed to play is "too hard". Of course, it's pretty hard to find simple music that sounds interesting without reverting to Mary Had a Lillte Lamb, or Claire d' Lune.

Nice to learn what tunes are your targets...! To give my contribution, after having learned in the last 6 months many Montgomery's tunes -my hero! ('Round midnight, Days of wine and roses, In your own sweet way, 6 on 4, Road song, The thumb, D natural blues), I'm now concentrated on Pat Martino. I'm now learning the track "Blues for Micky-O", a G blues with a lot of interesting and nice scales. Pat is great in that blues!!!!

Professor wrote last month:
"I play in an evening jazz big band at a local Jr. College for fun. Almost all the guys are ancient! It's alot of fun, and they have a ton of experience. We start up again next Thursday. I'll let you know what tunes we'll be working on."
So, what's in your first set?

OK... We start with:
Buster's Last Stand Street of Dreams Day In, Day Out That Old Black Magic Pensive Miss Corner Pocket Magic Flea Sweets Tribute Danny Boy Wind Machine Ballad for Jill But Beautiful
There are several others, and we're not sure yet exactly which ones will be on the program when we do our concert in November.
Sorry, but I've been really busy lately. I'll update you guys when we get a firm list, two sets and an intermission.

Since I last reported I have worked out arrangements of Nearness of You and A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square. I haven't got them in tabledit yet but if anyone wants them I can tab them out and post on our resource page.
