Well, for one there's the peace and quiet. I like that, may be a zen thing, hah!
I've been on other messageboards with fighting, name-calling, put-downs, flaming....these people, present and past, are and were nice to each other, honest, helpful.
The edit buttons work, none of the threads are locked, nobody is deleting peoples' posts, no "banning"...you have to see other places to appreciate this one.
It's not so big that you get ignored. Nothing sadder than starting a thread and getting no answer. It happened here when nobody was here ( in 2003 mainly), but it happens all the time on boards with thousands of members.
Nobody gets called a "newbie" or competes for numbers by putting in meaningless posts.
Lots of links to other jazz places, and most of them work.
Great subject matter!

Yeah, asking questions and comparing your opinions with others is a big part of messageboards.
Lately, I've been playing through the chord patterns and examples on the board. That's really what I enjoy the most here. Like JA's Blue in Green, anders' Blues.
I go straight to the lessons in "Guitar Player" magazine, always looking for new stuff.
Anyway, the music on here is another good thing. I'll add some more soon, hope others do also.

So, is Guitar Player still a good magazine? I've been thinking that i should get a subscription to a guitar mag, but I don't know which ones are good, and which ones suck.

Try Just Jazz Guitar - the best guitar mag I've ever seen.

I just looked at justjazzguitar.com . Looks like an interesting place.
So, have you subscribed, JA? How many of the mags do you have? Are you playing/ practicing anything from there?

Hi M. Yeah, I get that mag. It's full of interesting things like arrangements, reviews, and other things of interest to jazz guitarists. It's the best mag I've ever read on jazz guitar and I highly recommend it. A little pricy ($10.00 per issue) but well worth it.
I read Downbeat once in a while and Acoustic Guitar occasionally. But that's about it. I'd really rather spend my time playing/practicing than reading.

That's my conflict with the computer, takes away time from playing guitar. I had this idea of playing guitar while I was on the computer...hmmm. Wasn't there a Seinfeld episode like that?
I bought a copy of JazzOne magazine off a newstand a couple years back. It was great, had multiple arrangements of "How Deep Is The Ocean." But there was no subscription card or info in it, and I never saw another issue.
Anyway, will try to obtain Just Jazz Guitar mag. Guitar Player usually has some jazz article or lesson, I've had one year of Acoustic Guitar, occassionally buy single copies of other music mags. Really figure that getting one good idea from a mag or lessonbook justifies buying them.
But it's kinda like collecting guitars- once they start collecting dust the red herring theory applies.

Yeah, I hear ya. That's why I'm just down to one mag, Just Jazz Guitar. I used to have boxes of Guitar player and just about every other guitar mag when I was younger. I cut out the interesting articles and either gave the rest away or chucked them.

I just pulled up JGGs website again justjazzguitar.com/It mentions Mark Stephani's place with 800+ free lessons, and has a link to a fee adobe/acrobat reader download. Back to the topic of this thread, just wanted to say thanks to all the new folks. Your interest is appreciated! Have a great 2005, all.

After a couple of quiet days, I find myself wondering if everything's OK. Guess March came in like a lamb.
I like that this place keeps challenging me in different ways. Stretching the mind, stretching the fingers...it's been an interesting ride.

Thought this might be a good thread to pull up. What I really liked when I first came here was the little lessons. I may bump a few of them, so the visitors and new folks can find something to play around with.
I'm still adding bookmarks, having gotten used to getting emails when someone posts. Now nobody gets them unless they go through the several-step program.
Hey, the board is still here, guess that's a good thing!

Another positive here is that no one is pushing anything. No spam-type emails coming every day (like from another place I signed up at lately).
I am starting to do a little deleting now, but gently and only with good intent.
