Folks, I'm a new member here, and I just wanted to greet everybody. I used to post on the John Petrucci forum, but... the quality of posts there has dramatically gone from good to mediocre, and my preferences have changed a whole lot recently. I've always been into fusion, and I have been getting more and more into straight-ahead jazz over the last few months. As a consequence, I bought an Ibanez AK-85 this weekend, and I intend to start practicing jazz with the hope of being able to play it one day. I have very little time to practice, as I am enrolled in graduate school at the moment and living with my fiancée. Still, I want to, and the will is there! This being said, I am glad there is a forum like this one around, and I am looking forward to discussing with you guys. But please, please bear in mind that I am a newbie when it comes to jazz, even though I've been playing the electric guitar for 15 years! Cheers, Marc

Grad school + fiancée = big trouble Next thing you know, you'll be getting rid of your "stupid guitars" to make room for a lighted curio cabinet. ------------------------------------------ Welcome! ;D ;D ;D

Good to see you here, Marc.
What have you decided to practice, to get into jazz? Are there certain tunes you want to play, chords or scales you're trying to figure out how to use?
Who do you listen to, play along with?
Good music, good woman, good guitar, higher education...sounds like you've got it all!

Good to see you here, Marc. What have you decided to practice, to get into jazz? Are there certain tunes you want to play, chords or scales you're trying to figure out how to use? Who do you listen to, play along with? Good music, good woman, good guitar, higher education...sounds like you've got it all! Well, as I said, I have been playing for about 15 years, and I have mostly stuck to progressive rock and metal. In recent months, I have grown increasingly dissatisfied with the whole "shred" thing... The only such guitarist I can still stand to listen to is John Petrucci. I also rediscovered jazz when I bought Charlie Hunter's Right Now Move at the beginning of summer. As I am starting from the very beginning when it comes to jazz, I am learning jazz chord arpeggios and am trying to learn standards. You'll laugh at this, but I am learning "Autumn Leaves" this week! As for what I play along to, since I am new to jazz improvisation, I am playing along to very simple, slow chord progressions to make sure I can at least start having a jazzier sound... I still have to learn the melodic minor scale as well as the bebop scale, unfortunately. Other than Charlie Hunter, I like to listen to Wes Montgomery and Grant Green. I also love fusion (e.g. Scott Henderson, Frank Gambale, Allan Holdsworth), but I figure I will try to learn straight-ahead improvisation before I attempt at playing fusion... Thanks for both your welcomes! Cheers, Marc
