I'm working on transcribing songs and am having difficulties figuring out what chord is being played. I know what the chord root is and whether it is a major/minor, but after that I'm kind of lost. How do you determine whether it's a m7, dim, aug, or any of the other weird chords? I'd like to be able to just hear it, but my ear isn't that developed. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I would work on exercises that get your ears better accustomed to that. Something like that would be going through the 4 major types with a 5th less important, but cool chord. In this order: aug, maj, min, min7b5 (half diminished), and full diminished. Going through these (With same shape chord) lets you easily hear the chord types. And I think that doing this will eventually help all in all if you practice it and practice it. Also, about 90% of the time, bassists are playing the root of the chord, if you look at that, you might also be able to figure out the chord through a process of trial and error. Hope that might help.

Aren't you expecting just a little too much of yourself ? Personally, with my work I dont really find it all that necessary to be able to audibly recognise chord types on hearing them. I can get a kind of a rough idea. Wouldn't that be sufficient ? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
