I do extend chords all the time. What I should probably start doing now is start trying out different inversions and such.
I'm more interested in voice leading though, I was playing some tunes with my brother and where I was playing E half dimished he suggest where it goes to A7 to add a flat 9, because that carries that flat5 from the E-7. It was a good suggestion.
E-7b5 x7878x A7b9 xx7686
and then the next chord is D-7 x5x565

That certainly makes a smooth change to the Dm....can I ask what the tune was? The tune is "Bernie's Tune." I'm using the sheet from the new real book, I could post the changes or maybe just scan it if you're interested.

You can make subs by altering the dominant chord.This is done by flatting or sharping the 5th and/or 9th of the chord..... examples .......3x342x........is G7 with a flatted 5th 3x344x........is G7 with a sharped 5th 3x3434.......is G7 with a flatted 9th 353466........is G7 with sharped 9th 3x3446........is G7 with sharp 5th and 9th 3x3424.......is G7 with flat 5th and 9th 3x3444.......is G7 with sharp5th and b9th 3x3426.......is G7 with flat 5th and #9th

Chet Baker and Stan Getz also......and I see that Charlie Byrd and also Tal Farlow have recorded Bernie's Tune.....Interestingly it was written by Jerry Lieber,Bernard Millar and Mike Stoller........the Lieber/Stoller partnership wrote many rocknroll hits including a good few Elvis hits .

What kind of chords do you like to substitue for half diminished chords? I'm working with Autumn Leaves right now, and I can't find very many useable voicings for the chord. I'm playing it in G-, so it's EbMA7 to A half diminished to D7+9 . I have done the inversion of putting the b5 in the bass but haven't done much. xx7888 is the one I'm most likely going to, same voicing as x 12 13 12 13 x, I guess the half diminished and fully demolished chords would be a nice area to explore. Or at least helpful to me .
