Hi all, 1st post on an awesome site. Thanks be that there are some others like me.
Does anyone have some suggestions for simple melodic minor lines. I'm just starting to learn them in positions suggested by my teacher. The rule He uses is if a dom7th is in the position of 2,4 or flat 7 then play a melodic minor a 5th higher and or sub with a min/maj7th a 5th higher. If in the position of the other notes then a half step up with the melodic minor and maj/min7th chord.
Is there any songs you can think of that uses such a formula. Nice and simple stuff that is. Cheers Michael.

The correct mode of melodic minor used over those chords is the 4th mode, called the Lydian dominant mode. My favorite use of the melodic minor is the "altered scale" which is the 7th mode. I've learned a couple of altered licks, then learned how to substitute those for my lydian dominant licks. A good place to start might be for a G#7alt chord, play the 1st string, 1st finger on the 4th fret. Find all the notes of A melodic minor in that position. Once you have, you will have played the "altered mode zone" of the guitar neck. Any lick over G#7alt will also work over D7 (in the II IV or bVII position.)
