I recently picked up mandolin and have found that it has improved my guitar playing! The different tuning forces me to listen more carefully and try new fingerings. I haven't yet (and probably won't ever) try jazz but there are some great jazz mandolin recordings out there. I'm sticking to blues/folk/ragtime for now. It' also a great thing to pull out at jam sessions when there are too many guitars! Anybody else play the 8 strings?

I've doodled on a mandolin at some guitar shops, but that's about it. I found out earlier that it was tuned opposite like a bass, with the four top bass strings. So I created some low note voicings and played a "jazzed-up" version of Kansas City. People were looking at me weird though. But it was fun!!!!

I think the 'backwards' aspect is cool; at first it seems so immediate like all you have to do is play guitar chords with opposite fingerings, but then soon it turns out that the mandolin has it's own voice. I work really hard at not playing barre chords on guitar; and playing mando has helped with finger dexterity and thinking in other voicings.
