Could I canvass any opinions on Joe Diorio? On Joe Dorio as a player and teacher?
Joe has many publications dealing with jazz guitar tuition over the years, and apparently puts forward an 'intervallic' concept of improvising?
Any experience/ opinions of this?

It's pretty advanced stuff. If you're just starting out it may confuse and frustrate you more than anything. There's nothing wrong with Joe's material, it's just a little different approach.

Thanks.
Is there any instructional material [particulary books] which covers the basics and yet provides a COMPLETE programme for the improvising guitarist?
One which doesn't patronise the reader who may have general musical experience/knowledge, but wants to have the secrets of jazz guitar unlocked?

I really can't help you there. It's been years since I've looked at instructional material. The books I used exclusively (way back when, and which are still available) were Joe Pass guitar method (the red book) and Mickey Baker, book 1. I think today it is the opposite of when I was learning. Now there is an over-abundance of learning tools, enough to confuse the beginner/intermediate guitar player. All I can say is try to pin down what you want to work on and go from there. I started with chord melody and then took on improv (which for me is on-going). Best of luck.
