I've been wondering... why are there no female jazz guitarists.......there are any amount of keyboardists(check norah jones)sax players(mindi abair),countless vocalists.... and female instrumentalists in rock by the score.......where are the girls that swing with the guitar?

I think there is more than just one reason. First off, girls interested in music get shepherded to piano lessons very young. Secondly, girls interested in music join the band or orchestra in 6th grade and learn to play flute or violin, etc. There are no grade school guitar programs that I know of. Third, would you want your daughter hanging around a bunch of guitar players? Finally, there are some female jazz guitarists. There are several at UNT that I know of.

My daughter plays guitar quite well.....I'd like to see her hanging with the "right kind"of jazz players....I've shown her stuff and she digs it.....I'm going to encourage her in this area

Check out Emily Remler...her main influence was Wes Montgomery. Mary Osborne....influenced by Charlie Christian.....
Cultural factors have linked the electric guitar to males, but that doesn't mean that chicks haven't the ability or inclination to get down with the guitar....but culturally it's not seen as "ladylike"....females as "singer"are more within their comfort zone....
Incidentally 7% of electric guitars sold are to females

I forgot what I was searching for, I think it was a google image search actually, but I found out about Mimi Fox. I haven't heard any album, just checked out some samples but sounds like she can play damn good.

This past summer I got to see Joyce Cooling, smooth jazz artist, I say in the front row and was blown away by her playing. She played a custom guitar that looked like a strat, a delay, volume pedal, and chorus, i don't think she used the chorus pedal. She didn't use a pick, all finger playing what a great tone. She used a Fender amp I am not sure of the model, it had red knobs on it.
Her two last cd's are, Third Wish and This girls gotta play, both are very good. She would be very inspiratrional to any young aspiring jazz artist, especially a young girl.
Another female i have heard is Shirley or Cheryl Baily, another excellent player.

I concur on Emily Remler. She is one of my favorites. I also highly recommend Mimi Fox. Her disk "she's the woman" is e.
