Female Jazzers

I didn't have much to say about female jazz guitarists, but I am a big fan of the vocalists. You know, like Billie, Nina, Diana Krall, Sade, Julie London.

I really liked a video of Brenda Russell doing "Piano In The Dark" a few years back. Smoky club, understated jazz combo- "caught up in the riddle, I cry just a little when I think of letting go" - I get goosebumps just listening.

Anyone have other favorite women in jazz?

Hi M. I really like Diana Krall and Nora Jones. Hell, I even like Avril Lavigne. Go figure.

I'm not sure Nora is jazz, but I agree. It's one of the best albums I bought recently.

I put a couple of others in that category, did you ever hear Linda Ronstadt's standards album, or Sinead O'Conners? I think there's even one from Queen LaTifah, hah!

Yeah, I have Ronstad's. It's a fantastic album. I don't have a lot of female jazz ones. I don't know why either. Of course I'm not a great follower of jazz vocalists. I did see Ella Fitzgerald once tho with Joe Pass. Tommy Flannigan filled in for Oscar Peterson. What a concert that was.

I saw/heard "Ladies First" on VH1 just recently. Had never heard of her before, but that song has a wicked groove ! It's amazing what you can come across by accident

Hi All,

I highly recommend Mimi Fox's 'Solo' album, She's a 1st rate player. Mary Osborne's recordings from the '40's & '50's show her to be an authentic jazzer who played with some of the best. The late Emily Remler could hold her own with anyone and recorded with Larry Coryell and under her own name.
