I'm wondering how relevant "acid jazz"is to the jazz world . I've listened to quite a lot and like some.... In guitar terms it's interesting that the likes of Stanley Jordan gets to be sometimes listed in acid jazz.....and I've seen Wes Montgomery linked to the "roots" of acid jazz... Iv'e read that this is music with a deep jazzy groovy sound..... Or....employing contemporary beats with a jazz overlay Any acid jazz fans out there? Give us some views....

Maybe you could name some groups that fit this category? I remember acid-rock very well- Big Brother and the Holding Company, the Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Steppenwolf, the Grateful Dead come to mind.
Interesting subject, morjaz.

I loved the acid rock era.....songs from the bands you mentioned are pretty much imprinted into my brain.....and I,ve played many, many of them with different bands over the years.... when acid jazz came along as what seemed to be a new genre I was quite puzzled as I couldn't figure how altered states could mesh with actual jazz.('tho wasn't Charles LLoyd a psychedelic sax man at that time?)..for me my brain has to be well and truly there to play jazz......but I realised that acid jazz really meant something else..... there are,if you look it up on google, various definitions..including"essentially Grant Green-like or Lou Donaldson jazz/funk pieces with underlying hip-hop rhythm"..or Wikipedia definition-"jazz influences combined with soul,funk,disco,hip-hop.....bringing jazz fusion into new ground...." 2 examples in this genre are The Charlie Hunter Trio and also the guitarist Ronnie Jordan......(maybe crossing over to smooth with Ronnie) I guess I introduced this topic to try and stimulate some views on "new directions in jazz"(kind of thing).... does the average jazzer on this board forum look steadily to past eras of jazz or are there others who look bravely ahead ... how do we look ahead......?? is it important? what will new generations be doing?
