Yes, it is. Right now I am learning a totally new, (to me), method of key signature-related sightsinging that also includes singing chord progressions. It's hard, but I wish I had learned it years ago.

Hey, morjazz- not to put you on the spot, but what do you think of this thread? I'd still post some more songs I like if you'd be interested. Do you know "Scotch and Soda"? Crowds really love that one.
What gets the biggest response for you?

yeah.. it would be cool to post some songs that you like.I'd be definitely interested. What get's a reponse? Well my live outings are with my blues band and probably the biggest reponse is from my rendition of "Stack Shot Billy" by the Black Keys.I serve it up nice and raw, plenty of distortion, block chords relentlessy hammering on the beat. Back at home I make jazz arrangements of Guitar Masters Charts. My time is divided pretty equally between blues and jazz.Next year I want to get at least a trio together for jazz.....maybe with me taking some vocals......but also maybe looking for that nice looking female jazz vocalist that will take the trio places. That would be plenty cool.

I have to say that I don't know " Scotch and Soda".....is that that old song by Charlie Barnet? When you say it gets people going .....that's to say that it swings enough for people to dance to? I could definitely do with some of those. When I think of my next year Trio plan.....i would hope to have a set that incorporated both quieter backgroundy stuff ( of which I have most )but also a solid danceable hour's worth.....

Prof, ...... while in this thread column I kept glancing at your entry from June 2004 that was to do with the work you were doing on "key signature-related sightsinging" and singing chord progressions...Finally I became intrigued. What could that possibly be?(I wondered)....and how do you sing chord progressions? This would be in arpeggios? Anyway if you feel like elaborating on this at any stage,Prof..it sounds really interesting......for a singer it sounds like a good workout

"Scotch and Soda" is a jazzy slow ballad from the folk group The Kingston Trio. Not sure a swing version would work, lol.
Prof did start a thread about aural skills training. It's over at Theory.

Thanks Prof.......I have read through it and I will have a bit of a practise with it.It's really quite something.... I've usually had a few vocal spots in any gig without being the main vocalist....but now I'm having to do more and I quite need some kind of exercise/warm up technique. Can one actually strengthen one's voice? What I do mostly is just sing a few scales while playing those scales on guitar...listening ..and matching voice to guitar. Any other ideas?

morjaz,
I've started Scotch and Soda over at Comping, Jazzchords, and Chord Progressions. I'll put the whole song in over the next few days. It's an easy one to learn, hope you like it.

Mahayana....In thinking back to what (jazz)song people responded most to (a couple of years ago..when a band I was in played jazzy stuff) I realize it would have been"that old devil called love" popularized a couple of decades ago by Alison Moyet. We put more time by far into perfecting that number than any of the others.Worth it tho' as it is a great song.

That sounds good, morjaz. I'll look for it.
Do you remember how you played it, you know, what key and basic chord progression?
Have you strummed through Scotch and Soda yet?

I should mention that we had our own Billie Holiday at the time singing the song.....Ive never heard a male voice doing it altho I make an attempt myself occasionally......it would make a good instrumental tho'
