Hi,
I've been using a Zoom 123 drum machine. It has quite a few preset rhythm and bass grooves although only a few for jazz/blues. It's quite east to make your own which is what I do mostly. The sound quality is fine and far less boring than a metronome. I found that using a footswitch to turn the machine on and off was a good idea (It can be distracting to have a beat going on all the time).
I also experimented briefly with software based drum machines (Fruity Loops) but find teh Zoom does all I want.
To practice, I record a few bars of a rhythm from the machine via a M-audio MobilePre soundcard into Cakewake Guitar Pro 2. Then I can record a few bars of a chord progression that I want to practice improvising over. I'm quite new to digital recording but this approach works well for me and allows me to concentrate on learning.
Anyway, I have found that the Zoom 123 has been fine for my purposes.

Don't buy a drum machine. Buy a version Acid software and use live drum loops. Your songs will sound so much more professional. You can buy a cheap version of Acid for $5 from musiciansfriend.com.
