What kind of speaker amp combination is proper?

I have a Fender Blues Junior with the BillM mods. Its sound pretty clean with the presence set to a jazzy feel. A friend of mine whose got a good forty years playing recommended I put in a 100w speaker. The amp is rated at 15w but has a clean boost and a preamp boost. I don't know how these affect the wattage but 100w still sounds too big for me. But the other day I read a guy saying that a lot of jazz and metal players put 100+w speakers in small 15-30w amps. Is this true? I know the volume will go down since the speaker is thicker but will I get a good sound and tone? I'm looking at the Jensen blackbird.

I too use a Blues Jr. with a Tele for jazz. I don't have the mods as of yet, but the amp sounds pretty good as is. I would have a Fender twin but for the weight.
