Anyone have an opinion of the album 'Jazz Winds From a New Direction' by Hank Garland [1960]?
This is an interesting album as it has a country-based picker taking on jazz.
Apparently it was very influential at the time, particularly amongst those who like speedy playing.
My favourite solo on the record is that in 'Riot Chorus'.
How does he rate among jazz improvisers, on the evidence of this album?
The cover has Hank in a car with a whole bunch of archtops!

His is probably the most under-rated jazz guitar player that I know of. While I don't have any of his albums I know he was a dynamite player from listening to many of his recordings. In terms of the album you mentioned, I'm not aware of album names so much as individual tunes. Sorry I couldn't help more.
