I've been thinking of consolidating my collection. I have 9 guitars, and 6 amps. I've been thinking about shaving it down to get some nicer instruments, but have fewer of them. I use two or three electrics and both my acoustics. I wonder if I might be better off with just a few really good pieces, not that what I have is exactly low grade now.
What do you all think?

I couldn't agree more Prof. I'm down to 3 really nice pieces. And I have a great keyboard and small PA. It's really all I need and I feel so much uncluttered now.

Well, I'm pretty happy with what I have now. I've got a few electrics an acoustic and a couple of amps. But, you also have to factor in that I've had phases (ongoing, I practice multiple instruments) so I've also got drums and basses (no upright, unfortunetly). Anyway, like I was saying, I only have a couple guitars (I don't really like the pick ups in my strat so I don't think I'll be playing that much) so I don't really know what having 9 is like. But! I think the most important thing is playing on what you want. Now, that's not to say I think an instrument makes a player... but I DO think the instrument must suit you, you must be happy with it. That doesn't mean owning the most expensive axe out there just the one you feel most at home with. That was my theory for buying my Ibanez Artcore opting out for other choices: Gretsch, Gibson or even PRS (I'm sorry, I love those guitars (PRS)). I didn't feel it was my place playing an instrument that costs $1000 or $2000. I feel if I can make the money on playing my instrument then it might be time for me to consider a "higher end" guitar. (Or if I win the lottery ) I don't know if that helps you any... I myself like to just have the right instrument and leave it at that. Although, I have a hard time letting go... Bah, I'm rambling.

Well my thought process goes like this. Have a really nice piece to stay home and one nice one that you are willing to take out of the house. My Taylor acoustic is nice but my Goodall acoustic I baby. I don't mind taking my Heritage out but would love to get a custom Palen someday. Wouldn't take that out.

I take all my guitars out Pinsk. There's a couple that exceed $3000.00 but I bought them to be played. Of course the places I play are pretty low key and no bars of course. I wouldn't own an instrument I felt I couldn't take out to a gig. Just my 2 cents.

I wouldn't own an instrument I felt I couldn't take out to a gig. Just my 2 cents. Well, I feel that way too...up to a point. I really am leary of taking my vintage ES-335 out of the house too much.

I don't mean to be too rough on Pinsk. I know what it is like owning real nice guitars and worrying about something happening to them, but I guess I've mellowed over the years. And since I'm not a collector I feel a lot less stressed when I play my guitars out.

No worries. I actually don't mind taking nice peices out. But I would not relegate them to "work horse status", if that makes any sence. To each his own. Some people are very opinionated on these things. My opinion is that you buy it, do what you want to it. Keep it a glass case or step on it, I don't care, it's not mine. ;D

I agree. "Work horse status" is what Fenders are for. They're a little crude, but get the job done.

L4, I understand, but I am involved in too many genres to only have one guitar. I play in a big band rhythm section. I teach classical guitar students. I also teach beginner classes and students, for that I use my acoustic. I also like to participate in blues jams, and i play in a cover band occasionally. So, i need a few guitars, but maybe i could economise a little.
