I just bought the new Charlie Christian instructional DVD, and it is really the shiznit. I like swing Jazz ala Barney Kessel, Herb Ellis, and others and have looked for a good instructional video that shows some of the tricks to "swing" soloing. This DVD features Andy Aledort who first shows you how the CC solo is played at tempo, then shows you step by step how to play each section. I find that I just listen to the solo then go to the lick(s) I want to learn and get those down so I can incorporate them into my playing. I highly recommned this DVD for anyone wanting to learn more about swing guitar soloing. It's a new Hal-Leonard "Signature Lick" video, check it out at :

I also recommend a CD called "Lets Jam" Blues and Jazz by Peter Vogl. I've played Rock/Blues since 1972, but when I ventured into Jazz I felt lost. I needed a good practice CD that was easy and free of melody. I tried several JA CD's and some other offerings, but this one did it for me. It has several jams that just stay on one chord, so you can learn to apply your major, or minor scales without having to follow key, or chord changes. It also has 2-5-1's in different keys and tempo's, and fast and slow "Rhythm Changes" in Bb. This CD was the single most important tool I found to get me going in swing Jazz. Check it out at :

I'm not associated with either of these outfits, I just want to pass along what I feel are some good learning tools. If you have any favorite play-alongs, or instructional tools for swing, or bebop, please add them to this thread.
