I've just got my first real jazz box, and it came strung with 12-52 D'Addario Chrome Flats. These feel really strange to me after 40 years of playing rock n' roll - on all sorts of guitars - using roundwound 9's. Do all the traditional jazz players use flats - from Barney Kessell, George Benson, to Bireli Lagrene etc? Sorta feel that I should stick with these to get the real jazz tone. To me the feel is very different - but is the tone? Thanks for your opinions... Tony.

u dont really need to use flats to play jazz imo. whatever feels comfortable. u can get a lighter gauge flatwound than a 12 though. big difference if uve been only using light gauge strings. prob. just take a while to get used to the different feel of the string. effects & tweaking ur amp etc u can generate pretty much any tone/sound u want.
