Just wanted to say why I wanted this Section, what I mean by heads if you don't know.
Basically, the head is the melody and chords to a song. It may be on a piece of paper somebody hands you, in the fake sheet or published sheet music on your stand, or once you memorize it the Head is in your head.
There are some real interesting ones in liner notes with CDs, from various recording sessions. It's an insight into what the musicians were following, why the changes are where they are, so on.
Anyway, if you're enjoying something, old or original, I hope you'll click on new thread here and share what you're doing. I'll play it, that's a promise.

I'm going to post "Nardis" over at the new forum that's advertised all over this sie now.
Do you know this tune? It's an original by Miles Davis that he never recorded, but lots of others did.
The head I learned it from is a faded xerox out of some fakebook or other, that a friend gave me. You have to know the melody for the chords to sound like much, I'm still thinkng about how to put that down.
Anyway, come on over, check it out!

Ah, well. I did post Nardis at the new site, but it looks like that's gone, so I'll put it over here. Hope you like it.

That is a nice place, JA. I will do some "head-hunting" over there. I play a good percentage of those tunes, will be interesting to check out their arrangements.
Riffing on head-hunting, did you ever try to figure out the jazzy parts of "She Drives Me Crazy" by the Fine Young Cannibals?

Is a photo the only way to post music here? I'm not actually a big computer fan...Finale is the most complicated program I use, and even then I struggle with it sometimes. I haven't got a digital camera, but mahayana suggested I post an original composition over here. I've got one you guys would probably like.

Hey, Prof. I did Nardis by scanning it in, then using IMG in reply, after uploading to a free photo storage place to resize and get a URL. Still had problems getting the size right (too big an image makes the whole thread too wide, besides being slow to load). Maybe others can help, we're just getting started with this stuff.

One easy way would be to fax a copy to pinsk (our in-house communications officer), ask him to start a thread with it at Heads. He posted the number fax 609-599-2223 this morning. I'll send him an e-mail, let him know you have a tune to post and need some help.

@ Professor Have you got your composition in "Finale"? Then you could save it as midi (or tiff, if the file won't get too big (several mbs)) and send it to pinsk. He'll do the upload on our resource page. If you had the tiff, you could send it to me via email. I could convert it to a reasonable size and post it as an image.

Just send it on over. I check the office tuesday. Would love to see it. You could also try Kawe's suggestions. Let me know what I can do to help.
Have a great day.

Well, the one I had in mind was never put into a Finale file. We Xeroxed it, and played from the sheet music. I'm sort of wondering if I should copyright it before I have it posted on the internet.

We've wondered about copyrights here a few times. Probably a good idea, if you are into publishing or recording and releasing it at some point. Your option.
In the meantime, I'd love to have you e-mail me a scanned-in copy, for "educational" purposes only, promise!

Well, like I said before, I hate computers, so I don't have a scanner or any fancy stuff like that. I'll get you one, just don't be in a hurry.

I think mayayana has a good point re copyright. It's always been my contention that if I do an arrangement of say a "standard" for myself and share it with others for educational purposes and not for profit, then that's where I draw the line. I guess it's still an infringement, but nobody's profiting from it and it becomes more a moral argrument (and perhaps legal but I don't know the law). Is it that cut and dried? Maybe others could weigh in on this. Where is our obligation as arrangers?
