We're talking about this subject in a couple of other places right now, just thought it deserves it's own spot.
Say you have a tune in your head, and you can play the melody no problem. Or you have learned a chord progression, and have the melody in your head (or are singing the song while playing the chords).
Why not do an instrumental version that does both? That's chord-melody. Sounds simple, huh?
At least the idea of it is simple. Try it with a song you like, and you'll soon find that adding the melody notes between the chord changes makes you play chords you never played before, and your left hand will be moving from position to position to get chords that contain the notes you need.
It's fun and teaches your fingers quick chord changes that fit lots of songs. You can use simple two note, or three or more note chords, and you'll find them popping into your other accompaniments.
Anyway, glad we're on the subject. There's a whole lot of examples to show, hope everyone will put down some favorite "phrases" (chord forms that sound good played one after another).

By the way: Could you guys recommend some players, who are great chord soloists (like Burrel or Pass)?

A couple immediately come to mind:
Lenny Breau and Gene Bertoncini.
There are lots others. Even people like Herb Ellis, Ed Bickert, and Tal Farlow did chord melody with a pick I believe. I'll post more names when I have a chance to think about it.

Fine! Up to now I never heard any tunes of Breau, Bertoncini and Bickert. Thank you for that information, jazzalta2! I guess, that will be some of my next CD's.
