I feel I've penetrated into the core meaning of this forum. We all share this vast silence. Is there anything more profound in music than silence?

Hey, Kiwi.
Did you ever play "Sounds of Silence"? Think I've heard one jazz version, by Stanley Jordon.
I do feel guilty about not fixing this thing. I'll ask again about the new members problems over at the help forum.

Holy Cow, I think I found it!
This new version had a checked box in Admin "general setting," requiring that each new member account be approved by a staff member. There were 113 "pending accounts," which I just approved. Also unchecked the "required approval" box.
Maybe some of these folks, and future new members, will get their activation codes now and be able to login and post.
Sorry for not finding this much sooner. It was right there in FAQ problems with version IV, at proboards support forum.

Hey Mahayana......I played all the paul simon songbook...and all the other great songs of that era.......I listened to Stanley Jordan's version ( Sound of silence)after you mentioning it........great technique.... the version didn't grab me much tho it was pretty good....not many jazz guitarists take much from pop/rock songs.....I've always been interested in doing that ...but end up back with the standards........

It's true that standards are mainly songs from the '40s and '50s, which feature more complicated progressions than most '60s era pop music. Course you can jazz up anything you like.
Stanley Jordan would be more interesting to me if he played as part of a combo, and took turns soloing with other musicians.

A good half of my solo playing is based on pop and country. I love the standards, but when you've got a 3 hour solo gig, they can wear a little thin.

That's a great point Namaste......3 hours solo is quite a mission...do you move into pure country for those numbers or is it country jazzed?........a couple of Patsy Cline's songs...Crazy,I Fall to Pieces,Walkin' After Midnight...they're good with jazz.....also Crystal Gayle's Brown Eyes Blue...... ....in fact, come to think of it there's plenty of country songs that can be good with jazz(not even counting Western Swing)..... And,sure,I can see how throwing in a couple of selected pop songs would break things up a bit.I'd go for a couple of Jack Johnson's songs for a start..... sorry ..I'm rambling.....putting off going back to work ;D BTW do you have mp3s perchance of your work?

morjaz, I go off of some of my shells here: www.acousticfingerstyle.com/midifil8.htmThe rest is off my head and from the Real Books. I like to alternate between different keys as well. To date I have nothing recorded. That is my goal though over the next little while. I'll keep you up to date.

I've played through(and learned from) a good few of your shell charts on that website.I learned a bit about voice leading there for sure. Good luck with getting your work recorded. BTW....how do you mean "alternate between keys"?

I BTW....how do you mean "alternate between keys"? Well, I do a lot of my material in 2 or 3 keys, for ex., I'll start Georgia on my Mind in say F and do the head and maybe improv for the next round or 1/2 and then go do D and come back and end in F. Or I go up in minor thirds. Anything to keep some variety.
