Right now in my playing (I'm playing in a folk/rock/country/whatever band) I find myself often starting and ending on the same note (root), I don't think this a bad thing necessarily but I find myself almost being forced to do it.
I never really noticed it until I read Mark Levines explination of playing scales (which is: go through all the modes by (in C) going up the C scale, play the high D then go down to D then go up E down F so on, then do the whole thing backwards).
I notice it especially in my playing in a blues solo. I find blues is often where I'll just get stuck in a rut (chordally as well).
Anyway, does anyone have suggestions that might open new doors?

They say young Eric Clapton locked himself in a room with a bunch of old blues albums and memorized hundreds of licks. That's one way to break the boxes- plan ahead to note-for-note somebody else's stuff.
I like our Blues thread at Comping for different chords. We could do a lot more with this subject.
